TOSA - Perfomance based Standards Workshop

"Performance Based Standards Workshop for Industry"

Wednesday 13th February 2002

A huge success with 85 attendees

On the 19th November 2001, the Truck Operators and Suppliers Alliance (TOSA) was formed comprising the Australian Road Transport Suppliers Association (ARTSA), Australian Trucking Association (ATA), the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association of Australia (CVIAA) and the Truck Industry Council (TIC).

It was recognised by the four bodies that a united industry representation was required to resolve specific issues that are of mutual interest or which the four groups share a common goal.

TOSA's first activity was a workshop aimed at identifying recommendations and expectations from industry on critical aspects of the Performance Based Standards project. The group is intent on ensuring that industry put its views forward to encourage a balanced outcome for this project.

As well as representatives from all sectors of industry, the NRTC, state and federal jurisdictions were present and provided an overview of the project and to hear industry's views on PBS. It was an interactive day of presentations and workshops designed to raise issues such as:

  • PBS measures and standards - has the NRTC got it right?

  • Case studies (25 m plus B-double, truck & dog, A+B combination) - what should these vehicles look like in order to improve productivity and what sort of performance would they have? - how would this compare with currently-proposed standards?

  • Role of operators - what operators would need to do to obtain approvals and show compliance - is computer simulation the only answer?

  • Role of manufacturers - what manufacturers would need to do to assist in the approval process
