Aimed squarely at truck salesmen and fleet purchasers, ARTSA Chairman Dr Peter Sweatman launched the latest ARTSA publication on the topic of Performance Based Standards (PBS). According to Dr Sweatman, "PBS provides the most powerful reform opportunity for the road transport industry in the years ahead." The 30 page booklet is well illustrated, and provides a user-friendly guide to the concepts behind PBS including details on each of the proposed safety and infrastructure measures. The publication was produced by ARTSA with funding and technical assistance from the NRTC. It is provided as a free download from the electronic library at http://www.artsa.com.au At the official launch on Friday 5th September, the Chief Executive of the NRTC Tony Wilson said "PBS is a great opportunity to maintain the reform momentum and to produce productivity gains that are road, road agency, regulatory and community friendly." Tony Wilson indicated that the final PBS standards were close, with Ministers expected to consider these in the next few months. "The next steps are to work through some PBS case studies and the NRTC is looking forward to partnering with industry in some of these studies" he said. Whilst acknowledging that PBS will face its challenges from the community, Tony Wilson pointed out that the road transport industry was intensively competitive and that this competitiveness would continue to drive innovation. "The smart will innovate and the rest will follow" he predicted.
