What are you doing on the 6th May? - we will be at the NTC

ARTSA members will meet at the National Transport Commission, level 15, 628 Bourke Street on Thursday 6th May from 8.30am to noon with lunch to follow, to participate in:

  1. Briefings

    1. National Heavy Regulator - its impact on suppliers, certifiers and engineers, ADR's and in-service standards
    2. HVTT11 - highlights of the recent international conference (http://www.hvttconference.com) held in Melbourne
    3. PBS Review Panel - Chairman David Anderson to discuss equipment being approved and lessons for suppliers
  2. Technical issues and standards
    1. PBS Blueprints - feedback on dimensions and specs
    2. PBS regulatory impact statement - feedback needed

  3. Working Groups
    1. Brake Code of Practice - first sections ready to be released. Further drafts for discussions. More input needed
    2. EcoStation reference group - developing energy ratings for equipment
    3. Certification reference group - national modification assessment scheme and a replace parts code of practice
    4. TMC program - developing the program details
    5. Aerodynamics - performance measurement with Monash University

This is seriously good content and discussion that you will not get anywhere else and not to be missed. This is a members only function. To attend you have to book by emailing with your confirmation.

ARTSA releases its 2010 meeting program

The ARTSA program for 2010 is a mix of regular quarterly updates on issues across a spectrum from vehicle design, regulations, certification, PBS, braking, replacement parts, emissions, aerodynamics, safety and other topics. Members and prospective members are invited to attend. According to ARTSA Chairman Dr Peter Hart, "ARTSA is one of the best technical groups in the heavy vehicle domain. Its technical members have enormous expertise and are contributing to the advancement of the technical agenda in this country. We invite you to become part of our network"

3rd December meeting and Christmas Lunch - Lifesaving Victoria

Our last meeting was on Thursday 3rd December at Lifesaving Victoria with followed by Christmas lunch at the same venue.

The agenda was in two parts:

  1. A report back on 2009 in terms of:
    • Brake Code of Practice and its progress
    • Technical and Maintenance Conference - fresh approach and building for 2010
    • EcoStation and ARTSA's opportunity to develop a star rating system for equipment as well as other technical standards around energy efficiency

  2. The challenges and opportunities for 2010 and the ARTSA work program:
    • PBS and the Blueprint approach
    • National Heavy Vehicle regulator and what this can deliver for transport
    • Engaging with regulators on technical issues
    • The opportunity for telematics to play a bigger role in fleet safety, productivity and compliance

We had a number of jurisdictions and the NTC in attendance so there was an opportunity to exchange views on the topics above. It was a great success.

ARTSA Brake Meeting - Friday 23rd October, 10am to 4pm, VTA, Wirraway Drive, Fishermans Bend

The ARTSA Brake Project is now at an advanced stage with sections drafted on:
  • Brake code
  • Recommended practice
  • Review of current technology
  • Technology map and brake estimator
  • Brake calculator

The code will also look at road side testing

The intention of the proposed meeting is to present each section in detail and discuss any issues raised and the approach taken.

The meeting will also discuss a testing program to back up the Code. Documents to be discussed include:

ARTSA Brake COP Pt 3

ARTSA EcoStation and Vehicle Certification meetings - afternoon of Monday 28th September

ARTSA is holding two separate briefing sessions as part of its College agenda. These are:

EcoStation briefing and discussion - Monday 28th September

12.30 (for sandwich) and meeting from 1pm to 2.30pm, VTA, Wirraway Drive, Fishermans Bend.
ARTSA has recently joined EcoStation (see http://www.ecostation.com.au) as a foundation partner.

Branded as "saving fuel, saving money, saving the environment" this program has been borrowed from the US EPA where it has achieved huge emissions savings in the last 5 years. This session will brief participants on EcoStation and ARTSAs role and then discuss the concept of fuel efficiency and measurement systems.

The meeting should be of interest to those whose equipment and systems can provide fuel efficiency gains.

This meeting will be followed by

Vehicle Certification - establishment of a certification reference group

3pm to 5pm, VTA, Wirraway Drive, Fishermans Bend
ARTSAs Regulation College is hosting this gathering of certification enigneers and those interested in: 

  • certification systems
  • vehicle modifications
  • parts certification
  • harmonisation (or lack of) policy in Australia
  • establishment of a certification reference group

ARTSA meeting - 14th May at Brisbane Truck Show - 1.30pm to 4.30pm in Governors Pavilion

This is a combined meeting with the National Bulk Tanker Association and will feature:
  • Braking compatibility of multi combination vehicles
  • PBS blueprints
  • Smartway initiative
  • Alternative fuels
  • Truck and trailer panel of experts to field questions

This meeting will start with a sandwich and coffee at 1pm and end with a beer following 4.30pm. Always an excellent meeting with experts on hand and tanker customers

Earlybird Parking for $10 at Docklands Stadium is available (in before 9.30, out after 12.30), a five minute walk to NTC and next to the Lamore restaurant

The agenda

  1. Regulators meet suppliers
    We will have an opportunity to hear from or meet over morning tea all the State and Federal vehicle regulators. These include:
    • Peter Robertson, head of Vehicle Safety Standards for the Federal Department of Infrastructure
    • Neil Findlay, Deputy Chair of the PBS Review Panel
    • The PBS Review Panel representatives from each State

    Peter will cover the current ECE13 harmonisation agenda and the ADR review process. Neil will invite us to discuss the PBS agenda and how this can be made to work better. This is a unique opportunity to see all the regulators in the one place and informally discuss your issues

  2. Brakes: launch of NTC's Braking Paper
    A long awaited paper. NTC are keen to release it and we have asked for this to be the day

  3. ARTSA's Braking Code of Practice
    We now have the funding and work has commenced. Hear the latest and have your say

  4. TMC: what worked, what can be done better
    Time to form recommendations for 2009

  5. ARTSA College progress and plans
    Some good new ideas for 2009

  6. Loose ends: what ever happened to non genuine parts, alphabet soup and other initiatives
    A number of worthwhile projects still to be delivered

  7. Workplace safety chart
    Released at TMC, we will discuss and agree next steps

  8. Member round table: what are the issues and can we address them?
    Have your say and lets create the 2009 priority list

ARTSA's next quarterly meeting HAS BEEN MOVED from ARRB to the Victorian Transport Association, Wirraway Drive, Fishermans Bend. The meeting runs from 8.30am til 12 noon.

The agenda includes:

  • Brake Balance Code of Practice launch of project
  • ARTSA College reports on safety, braking, energy efficiency and trailers
  • Engine management issues
  • Queensland combination testing
  • ARRB presentation on latest heavy vehicle research
  • PBS: what are the latest plans?

ARTSA's brake balance code of practice is now underway. Hear how this will be delivered and be a part of the development. A number of other speakers will also cover the above topics.
